Come on Eileen. Who Let the Dogs Out? Eye of the Tiger. 99 Luftballons.
Oh. Don’t mind us. We’re just naming some of our favorite one-hit wonders. And getting all of these songs stuck in your head for the rest of the day. You’re welcome.
You know what wouldn’t make our list of one-hit wonders? Eargo. That’s because Eargo is about to drop its third hit in a row: Eargo Neo.
Meet the Minds Behind Eargo Neo
We recently had a conversation with our Chief Technology Officer, Tim Trine, who filled us in on how Eargo Neo went from an idea to a reality, and the brilliant team behind the product. Which reminds us, we really need to thank Tim for providing us the information needed to write this blog post…and to apologize for singing “99 Luftballons” at him for twenty minutes straight…
Maybe you’re familiar with Eargo’s earlier hits, Eargo Plus and Eargo Max. They both turned the hearing aid industry on its ear and made everyone sit up and take notice. But as our CEO Christian Gormsen said, we needed to be more than a one-hit, one-product wonder.
With Christian at the helm, the chances of that happening were basically zilch.
Christian’s been in the hearing health and professional services industry over two decades, so he’s more than earned his stripes. Heck, he’s probably earned some polka dots. He’s been instrumental in growing the hearing health and professional services market for leading global companies, and he’s really good at what he does. Seriously, they don’t name just anyone one of the best CEOs of 2018.
And so with Christian at the controls, we went back to the studio to mix and master our latest device. Product development on Eargo Neo started in 2017. Coincidentally, our research and technology department’s crippling caffeine addiction also started in 2017. That’s because they were tasked with making sure we took what worked so well in Eargo Max and Plus and building upon it, improving the battery capacity, Flexis, design, audio fidelity, and connectivity.
So…y’know, small stuff.
Props to the team (and to caffeine, the real MVP), because they got the job done. You can see the difference in Eargo Neo right away: it’s smoother, sleeker, and streamlined, which translates to our best fit yet.
Flexi Palms provide a better acoustic seal which means richer, fuller sound. And most exciting of all? Eargo Neo is fully customizable, thanks to cloud connectivity and Bluetooth capabilities. That means more personalized attention from your Personal Hearing Professional (PHP), and fully personalized hearing plans, made for your ears only.
Pretty neat, right?
We asked Christian what excites him the most about Eargo Neo’s launch. “It’s really been a study in industrial design,” Gormsen said. “How do we optimize the physical fit, the comfort we provide, the ease of insertion and operating, the power we can provide.” He acknowledged it was an ambitious undertaking, but is confident that Eargo Neo is going to deliver on all fronts.
What made him so confident? The ace up our sleeve, of course. Or should we say…the Aase up our sleeve?
Say hello to Jonathan Aase. He’s our Principal Product Design Engineer, resident ski and surf bum, and all-around tech wizard responsible for revolutionizing Eargo.
Jonathan came to us after a six-year stint at a little-known company called Apple. He worked on all manner of accessories and was the architect behind Apple’s Airpods. That’s right… if Airpods have ever graced your ears, you own Jonathan a debt of gratitude. Or a high-five. Whatever’s easier.
While working on Airpods, Jonathan learned how to make a high-quality consumer product from start to finish. It’s knowledge that we’re pretty grateful for here at Eargo. But even though Jonathan was constantly learning and developing cutting-edge products, he found himself wanting more. He wanted to help others and make a positive impact in the world.
Oh hey, guess what Eargo also wants to do?
So Jonathan came on board, full of dreams, ideas, and a burning desire to reduce the amount of waste that goes into products.
That’s right: not only did he revolutionize Eargo’s product design and technical abilities, he gutted and simplified the device architecture, leading to fewer parts and less waste. Want an example? Eargo Max’s charging area required four parts. Eargo Neo’s? Only one.
Eargo Neo’s overall footprint, energy and materials are far less than any prior Eargo device. So not only is Eargo Neo helping customers, it’s helping the world. Pretty neat, eh?
With all that technical know-how, we can see why Christian was so confident that Eargo Neo would deliver. And as nervous as we are to watch our baby spread its wings and take flight in the world, we can’t wait to hear your thoughts.
