“Listen Up!” Here’s How Bennett Began His Journey to Better Hearing:
Bennett considers himself lucky: the native northern New Jerseyan had “normal” (our therapists discourage us from using that word) hearing until his mid- to late-fifties, when he started to realize he was saying “huh” and “what” more often than usual. His normal stopped being such about six years ago, when his children told him to “listen up,” and urged him to invest in his hearing.
For the past six years, Bennett has been searching for a hearing solution that would meet his hearing loss needs, lifestyle and budget. His brick and mortar audiologist gave Bennett a diagnosis of moderate hearing loss that was slightly worse in the right ear. At the time, he chose to purchase a more traditional, behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid for his worse-off ear. Bennett expressed that the hearing aid helped – sometimes even too much – joking that he “didn’t want to hear what people were saying” too clearly!
Nevertheless, Bennett’s hearing did improve, though his BTE hearing aids were continually dislodged from his ear when competing for space with his glasses. He used an apt expression for this, which we translated into an acronym in case any kids are reading: PITA. When Bennett’s vision changed and he needed to wear glasses round the clock, he began to research in-the-canal (ITC) devices.
While Bennett found ITC hearing aids an improvement from BTE devices, he was not shy to explain what he didn’t like – an increased cost, and the need to replace batteries every week if not more frequently. Bennett referred to changing batteries as a “major bone in my craw,” and began dreaming of rechargeable hearing aids. He was unsatisfied with the ITC units he found at his local audiologist, saying they “didn’t have the technology to justify a cost upwards of $5,000.”
Bennett’s Eargo Experience:
Aggravated by the shortcomings of available hearing aids on the market Bennett began doing his own research, and stumbled across articles discussing Eargo in a publication he “respects,” Forbes. Research showed Bennett there “isn’t anything like Eargo on the market,” and that the price of Eargo was “half of what he was looking to spend at his local audiologist’s office.”
