“After wearing them for ten minutes, I didn’t want to be without Eargo. I even made my audiologist a believer!”– Bennett

“Listen Up!” Here’s How Bennett Began His Journey to Better Hearing:

Bennett considers himself lucky: the native northern New Jerseyan had “normal” (our therapists discourage us from using that word) hearing until his mid- to late-fifties, when he started to realize he was saying “huh” and “what” more often than usual. His normal stopped being such about six years ago, when his children told him to “listen up,” and urged him to invest in his hearing.

Journey to search hearing aid

For the past six years, Bennett has been searching for a hearing solution that would meet his hearing loss needs, lifestyle and budget. His brick and mortar audiologist gave Bennett a diagnosis of moderate hearing loss that was slightly worse in the right ear. At the time, he chose to purchase a more traditional, behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid for his worse-off ear. Bennett expressed that the hearing aid helped – sometimes even too much – joking that he “didn’t want to hear what people were saying” too clearly!

Nevertheless, Bennett’s hearing did improve, though his BTE hearing aids were continually dislodged from his ear when competing for space with his glasses. He used an apt expression for this, which we translated into an acronym in case any kids are reading: PITA. When Bennett’s vision changed and he needed to wear glasses round the clock, he began to research in-the-canal (ITC) devices.

While Bennett found ITC hearing aids an improvement from BTE devices, he was not shy to explain what he didn’t like – an increased cost, and the need to replace batteries every week if not more frequently. Bennett referred to changing batteries as a “major bone in my craw,” and began dreaming of rechargeable hearing aids. He was unsatisfied with the ITC units he found at his local audiologist, saying they “didn’t have the technology to justify a cost upwards of $5,000.”

Bennett’s Eargo Experience:

Aggravated by the shortcomings of available hearing aids on the market Bennett began doing his own research, and stumbled across articles discussing Eargo in a publication he “respects,” Forbes. Research showed Bennett there “isn’t anything like Eargo on the market,” and that the price of Eargo was “half of what he was looking to spend at his local audiologist’s office.”

He was intrigued by our “spiky” Flexi Fibers (no need to worry – they’re made from medical-grade silicone and are super-duper soft), and put in a request for our sample kit. After speaking with our “non-pressure” Personal Hearing Guides and trying our sample kit for fit and feel, he felt like “Eargo was made for him.” Bennett purchased our hearing aids three days later, and began to wear our insanely comfortable devices for 16 hours each day, noting he fully depleted the battery before handing them back over to the charger and holding case.

He then introduced his local audiologist to our modern hearing aids, who said she had “never seen anything quite like Eargo before.” Bennett received his audiologist’s blessing, and is happy to report he’s hearing life to the fullest with our “space age” hearing aids!

Here’s What Bennett Had to Say About Eargo

“Mission accomplished – I couldn’t be happier! I no longer have to choose between wearing my glasses or my hearing aids. I have 100% confidence recommending Eargo to others experiencing hearing loss – it’s the real deal.”

Eargo real deal

Bennett’s Eargo Experience as told by his Personal Hearing Profesional, Rachel Santiago

Getting to know Bennett has been a true pleasure! Helping him hear more of life – even better!

When I first spoke with Bennett, he said with excitement “within the first few minutes of wearing Eargo, I knew these were the hearing aids for me. I didn’t want to be without them!”

Bennett has sampled other hearing aid styles and always felt a compromise was needed when choosing a device, whether it be in regard to cost, comfort or ease of use. After reading about Eargo in a recent Forbes article, he decided to take the first step toward hearing more of life with Eargo. As Bennett has mentioned during our conversations, he has enjoyed the entire process from the moment we first responded to his request to try our sample kit.

Bennett also discussed that he returned to his brick and mortar audiologist to show off his modern hearing aids aid charger (we’ve nixed batteries in favor of a more modern way to power up). Attempts were made to talk Bennett out of choosing Eargo because of confusion about our direct-to-consumer, online business model – essentially, his audiologist was concerned Bennett wouldn’t receive the support he deserved through our telehealth audiology. I’ll leave you with what Bennett said to the audiologist about his Eargo experience:

“Once I explained the level of support and professionalism I received from Day One with Eargo, combined with how overwhelmingly great their team has been… I made her a believer, and have my audiologist’s blessing in Eargo!”

  2. I ordered my sample kit as soon as I heard about Eargo. I am hanging on to my samole because I’ve been told that I don’t need it yet. But I know that there is only one brand I’m interested in wearing!

After two years with Eargo I have several compliments and a few observations. First, this is one of the most professional companies I have ever dealt with. The tech that helped me early on might have been Rachael, but whoever it was was exceptional.

However, Eargos have their limitations. I use mine quite a bit where there is background noise ( clanging dishes in a kitchen, for example) and unfortunately the Eargos amplify the clutter. I suspect this is because they amplify the high frequency sounds. This severely limits my use. In use in an area with less background noise, the Eargos are exceptional. A first class product and company. When they are able to fine tune to eliminate background noise I will be the first customer.

Three years ago I contacted you about eargo. Sent you a copy of my audiology report. Had to fight to get someone to discuss this with me. Your customer service was nightmarish. Ultimately Eargo told me my hearing loss was beyond the range that Eargo could help with.
Have you increased the capabilities of your instruments to help people like me with moderate to severe hearing loss? Wasn’t this the product developed by French ENT who fly fished? I’m a BTE user at the moment.

    • Jennifer D. Reply

Thank you for letting us know more about your Eargo experience, Gordon. Eargo was designed for adults experiencing mild to moderate, high-frequency hearing loss and may not be appropriate for those experiencing more severe to profound loss. Either way, we have requested one of our Personal Hearing Guides reach out with a phone call or email to discuss whether Eargo could help you hear more of life. Please feel free to dial us directly at 1-800-734-7603. You can learn more about our fly fishing story at https://blog.eargo.com/fishing-for-inspiration/.

I got a sample a long time ago. I don’t know if they have changed, but I really like them but couldn’t afford them. Can you shower with them?

    • Jennifer D. Reply

Eargo devices are not waterproof. Please do not wear them while swimming or in the shower. We even provide a handy-dandy sticker to serve as a reminder before washing up. Please let our team of personal hearing guides know should you have any questions. We’re all ears at 1-800-734-7603 for any questions about our comfortable, invisible hearing aids.

I do not wear them (over the ear) full time for many reasons as Bennett had. I am always checking to be sure they are still there. I still cannot hear anyone unless they are facing me and speaking very distinctly. Music, is just noise. I am 88, very much alive, on a very small income, so aprox. what am I looking at? Thank you

I am 83 years old and have been a hearing ais user for it seems like forever. However while reading your stories I came across the phase “device carried in the pocket”. Is this the amplifier? Does the Eargo contain three pieces? I am confused. Please iluminate my understanding of how your hearing aids function.
