“Tell everyone you know who needs hearing aids that they need to try these things.”– Mike

The Feel (Not Hear) Good Decade

“Oh God, we’re going way back to the 1970s.” Navy veteran Mike M. first noticed his hearing was starting to fade well before we could have composed a blog post about his experience. While it wasn’t the most obvious, it stood out to Mike when he didn’t catch the names of the young ladies he came across – likely due to their high-pitched voices – which a sure sign something needed to change.

Hearing loss continued to quietly creep in on Mike over the years. The software company owner became increasingly aware he was having trouble hearing when he couldn’t converse with his dining companions at work luncheons, and when fielding questions in the midst of conference crowds and speeches at national conventions. Mike saw an audiologist about twenty years ago, who explained he had partial hearing loss and should consider a hearing aid. Mike’s response? “That ain’t gonna fly, I’ll just tough it out.” We can practically hear him shouting “Hooyah!” now.

Fast forward a few years: Mike is now a sprightly 70 years old, retired, but still “egotistical” (his words, not ours) enough to not want to admit his hearing loss or wear “old man” behind-the-ear hearing aids. Our Personal Hearing Guides hear this often: Mike was turning his TV up louder and louder, and his wife, children and grandchildren complained about the volume.

When the time came when Mike was ready to not only admit he had hearing loss but purchase hearing aids, he wanted to find a cost-effective device. He did some research late last year on what the hearing aid market had to offer, and was specifically searching for “more modern, less conspicuous” technology. Then, he came across Eargo. Mike thought, “holy moly, this is 21st century technology.” Toto, we’re not in the 1970s anymore.

Mike was naturally intrigued and requested our sample kit to learn more about the fit and feel of our hearing aids with a mock device. When Mike tested our virtually invisible hearing aids he was quick to share his opinion about our device: “If this is all there is to hearing more, I’ll do it.” After asking what he said were a million questions for our Personal Hearing Guides about his partial, high-frequency hearing loss, Mike invested in Eargo Max during our January launch.

“You couldn’t get the smile off of my face.”

When Mike first received his Eargo Max and put them in for the very first time, he lit up and a smile crossed his face. His wife sent him down the hall – not to create distance between the couple but to check how far his newfound hearing extended. For the first time in what seemed like ages (to his wife, at least) he heard the timer on his microwave. Mike can now hear all of his family when they speak, a previous difficulty when hearing his daughter-in-law’s high-pitched voice.

Mike and his family

Mike lives in the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” on one such body of water surrounded by woods and wetlands. He went outside and was “blown away” by the sounds of nature, hearing every crock and chirp in his backyard for the first time in a long time. To Mike, “everything changed: I hear all of the sounds of nature. I hear everything.” Mike said Eargo woke him up to the little sounds of life he was missing.

Backyard

It didn’t take long for Mike to acclimate to wearing our “tiny little device.” The retired software company owner marvels at Eargo’s “tremendous hearing capability packed inside a tiny little device,” calling our hearing aid “remarkable” and “easy to use.” Mike claims he is no longer the “sour old lump in the corner” (again – his words) at dinner parties and that his enhanced hearing makes all of the difference in the world in how he participates in conversations.

“I can’t say enough about Eargo.”

Mike claims he could go on and on about our modern hearing aids, but we’ll keep it short and sweet with a summary of the Navy veteran’s final thoughts:

“You can’t believe how happy my wife and I – even my kids – are. No one has to repeat themselves anymore. I’m absolutely blown away when I’m in groups and at dinner parties – I can hear everyone and I’m not just sitting there, isolated. Speaking from my experience in the software industry, a hearing aid like this is new ground for the end user. This technology is incredible and clear to see it was built for the user – Eargo’s functionality separates it from everything else on the market. The price is nothing compared to the benefit I received from the device.”

Mike’s Eargo Experience as told by his PHP, Kathleen Boyce

Kathleen

I’ve had the pleasure of working in the hearing healthcare field for eleven years. During this time, I’ve seen hundreds of individuals drastically change their quality of life through the use of hearing aid technology. Recognizing that our body has changed and taking that next step to manage the problem by finding a solution that works for us is most certainly a journey. However, the end result is always worth it. Not only for the patient but for the health professional coaching them through the process.

What I remember most about working with Mike is his level of excitement on our first call – his Welcome Call. His enthusiasm and eagerness to tell me about all of the new sounds he was hearing was so delightful. It was very clear that he loved his new ears! He explained to me that he and his wife each had their own benchmark test to determine if the hearing aids would meet their approval. For his wife, that benchmark was Mike’s ability to hear the microwave alarm – something he had never heard before. For Mike, that benchmark was hearing his wife’s voice as he had struggled for years to understand her. Our hearing aids passed with flying colors! In fact, Mike told me on one of our follow-up calls that “when it comes to hearing, these things are amazing!”

Stories and experiences like this one are why I come to work each day at Eargo. Hearing someone overjoyed because they feel connected to the world around them again never gets old. Sometimes we take the little things for granted – like the microwave alarm – and it’s important to be reminded that these little things can be life-changing for so many people. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to support Mike on his hearing journey. Thanks for being a part of the Eargo family, Mike!
