Be the life of the party with these surefire conversation starters.

Holiday sales are in full swing, decorations are popping up in stores, and you can’t turn on the TV without hearing that it’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas. That’s right, we’re officially knee-deep in the holiday season. And you know what that means: holiday parties.

Whether it’s your office holiday party, a white elephant with friends, or your entire family gathered around the Thanksgiving table, it never hurts to have a few conversation starters in your back pocket. Because let’s face it, you can only hear about the upcoming election or Cousin Milton’s adventures in online dating so many times.

Here are 10 of our tried-and-true conversation starters that’ll have your whole group participating in no time.

1. Take any interesting trips this year?

There’s nothing people love talking about more than travel. And it’s a win-win topic: They get to relive once-in-a-lifetime memories, and you get to add new destinations to your travel bucket list. (California, anyone? How about Maui?) But be warned, this question is usually accompanied by more travel pictures than you’d ever believe humanly possible. So if you’re looking for a quick and easy topic, may we suggest…

2. What’s the best TV show you binge-watched this year?

No matter who you’re seated next to, chances are they recently watched something good. So whether your brother just caught up on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, your granddaughter is a Game of Thrones superfan, or you’ve seen every season of The Great British Bake Off and want to discuss the perils of a soggy bottom with someone, you’ll never run out of conversation when it comes to TV. Plus, you might find yourself intrigued by a show you’ve never seen before.

3. What’s one experience you’ve had that you would recommend everyone try at least once?

This is a great question if you’re looking to have some new adventures in the new year. Everyone has a moment that they’ll never forget. Maybe it’s snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, stargazing at the Grand Canyon, or eating the most pasta you can possibly stomach at a special hole-in-the-wall place in Rome. Whatever the answer, this question will bring back great memories for everyone at the table, lead to some great discussions, and hopefully provide some inspiration.

4. What’s your biggest holiday guilty pleasure?

We all have them, and there’s no better way to bond with your friends and family than over a shared obsession with cheesy, made-for-TV Christmas rom-coms or a secret penchant for Starbucks Caramel Brulée Lattes. Chances are you’ll learn a thing or two about people from their answers, and we have a feeling this question will garner the biggest laughs of the night.

5. What’s your favorite holiday?

Just because we’re currently in the Thanksgiving/Christmas/Hanukkah vortex, doesn’t mean it’s everyone’s cup of tea. And while we’re sure those holidays will have some outspoken and ardent fans, you may find yourself moderating a debate between the Fourth of July folks and the spooky Halloween ghouls and boys. But whatever the answer, be sure to ask follow-up questions, like what their favorite holiday traditions are or what foods absolutely make or break the holiday.

6. Do you have any secret talents?

This is always a fun one. Whether it’s something silly, like burping the alphabet backwards, or something seriously impressive, like being a concert pianist in college, you never know what you might find out. And be sure to (politely) ask for demonstrations, because there’s nothing better than dinner and a show.

7. What’s the worst meal you’ve ever eaten?

Fingers crossed the answer isn’t “the one we’re having right now.” But a bad meal leaves its mark, and oftentimes, there will be a great story full of colorful details to go with it. Plus, remembering those awful meals will make everyone more grateful for the delightful meal they’re (hopefully) partaking in. But just be sure the meal you’re having is actually palatable before you whip out this question.

8. What’s your favorite piece of useless trivia?

Get ready to learn! Everyone has a favorite useless fact, and chances are, one of them will blow your mind. If you need a couple of useless facts to get the ball rolling, we’ve got you covered.

  • The national animal of Scotland is the unicorn.
  • Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards.
  • The term “guys” (as in “hey guys and gals”) is derived from Guy Fawkes.
  • Human skin doesn’t have the receptors to sense if something is wet, so technically, we can’t feel wetness.

Hopefully that’ll get the fact-party started. And if you ever end up on Jeopardy, you’ll be glad you asked this question.

9. What’s the one thing that needs to happen before it officially feels like the holiday season to you?

We all have that one special tradition. Maybe it’s officially sending out Christmas cards, maybe it’s watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV, or maybe it’s decorating your house with all your well-loved baubles and bangles. Whatever it is, it’s always fun to hear what makes the holidays special for other folks, and nothing will get your group in the holiday mood faster than looking forward to that special tradition.

10. What are you grateful for this year?

Let’s face it, life can get hectic. And sometimes, we get so caught up in the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life, we forget to slow down and remember the good things. So take a moment and ask everyone to reflect on their year and what they’re grateful for. Whether it’s something big or something small, it’s always nice to hear what brings peace and happiness to your loved ones. And if you can hear what everyone is grateful for with crystal-clarity, then who knows? Maybe you’ll share that you’re thankful for your Eargos that have allowed you to get back in the conversation.

Our revolutionary hearing aids will make sure you don’t miss a single conversation this holiday season with your family. And because they’re practically invisible in your ear, no one will know you’re wearing them. You’ll hear every joke, fact, and story with crystal-clarity.
